MaximsNewsNetwork: 05 March 2010 – The World Bank: India – In Indias Tamil Nadu state, infant mortality has been dropping for years. One of the reasons might be an aspect of health care reform that focuses on training mothers in staying healthy throughout their pregnancy. Hundreds of pregnant women come every week for checkups and treatment. Prenatal care, free of charge and close to their homes has become a corner stone of Indias campaign to bring down maternal and infant mortality rates. And many first-time mothers get more than medical support. SOUNDBITE (Tamil) Sunati, Pregnant Woman: I come every two weeks for a checkup and they give me the medication and supplements I need. They also asked me to eat a lot of greens, iron-rich foods and eggs. Poverty, malnutrition and lack of knowledge about healthy behavior lay at the heart of many pregnancy-related complications. Sometimes women cannot afford to eat properly or to make long trips to the clinics where they could get prenatal care. As a result, problems can go undetected and babies are born too early and sick. Like Dirvya, who was only 1.8 kilos at birth because her mother ate too little while working too hard. SOUNDBITE (Tamil) Mghala, Mother: I did not take the supplements that are recommended. But now that I see what happened to my baby, I know what I need to do next time.” Dirvya was lucky. She was referred to the districts neonatal unit where specialists will help her to get strong and healthy. SOUNDBITE …

Question by HisWifey12.8.09.: Health risks during second pregnancy after having an abortion the first time?
I was raped summer of 08 at the age of fifteen and had an abortion sept 08. I am now 17 and Me and my fiancé are now expecting a baby and I am worried if there is any health risks since I have had an abortion in the past? So far things are going normally, but I’m scared something will go wrong. I get my first sonogram on mar. 15th. Any help?

Certain studies show that there are higher risks during pregnancy for women who have already had an abortion. However, most of those relate to women who have had multiple abortions- as in 3 or more.
As long as the procedure was performed correctly, your risks are probably about the same as they were before the abortion. Just listen to what your doctor says. Congrats on the new baby.

Question by Treblacram: Are there health risks to pregnancy for women over 40?
I had always heard that pregnancy in women over 40 increases risk of birth defects and disorders such as down syndrome. But, I am curious if this is valid now considering that medical care is much better than it was in the past. Also, I see many women age 45 and older who are conceiving and seem to do just fine.

Answer by Invisible Pink ~ RN
Its still valid
Eggs start to mature after 40 resulting in what *could* be genetic defects – no matter how far technology has come this will always remain a fact

Eat Red Foods For Your Heart Dr. Willie T. Ong (Tips from Doctors Willie and Liza Ong of ABS-CBN’s Salamat Dok) Are you worried about your heart? Don’t feel blue. Go red, and eat red foods for your heart. This novel idea comes from the American Heart Association, which advocated that men and women eat red-colored foods to protect their hearts. 1. Red apples. Apples are rich in quercetins, a substance known to protect against Alzheimer’s disease and many cancers. Studies show that people who eat an apple a day have lower chances of getting lung cancer and Alzheimer’s disease when compared to non-fruit eaters. Even smokers who often eat apples can somehow minimize the risk of getting cancer. Apple skins contain pectin, which some studies show can lower bad cholesterol by as much as 16%. Apples may also prevent diabetes and childhood asthma. Eating the fiber-rich skin of the apple also has additional health benefits of having better skin, more regular bowel movement and lower risk for colon cancer. 2. Red watermelon. According to the US Department of Agriculture, watermelon may be beneficial for the heart and blood vessels. Researchers report that eating watermelons increases our body’s arginine levels, an important amino acid (Journal of Nutrition, March 2007). Arginine is a component needed to produce nitric oxide, a substance that relaxes the blood vessels, improves blood flow and may protect us from a heart attack and stroke. The deep-red watermelon variety contains the …
