Question by Someone: How soon after your dog breeds can you see signs of pregnancy?
This wasn’t a mistake. We took her to the breeder about 10 days ago and just got her back 3 days ago. She has been acting really sleepy. Is it too soon for her to show signs of pregnancy? And what are some other signs and how soon will we see them?

One of the most reliable signs- watching to see if her vulva stays slightly swollen. if it stays larger than usual, the breeding probably took. Your vet can manually feel for pups to confirm pregnancy 25-30 after breeding- stud owner should be able to tell you when they first tied…not sure why the process took a week at the stud’s house.

Breeding your dog without sufficient knowledge beforehand IS a mistake.
If you need to ask this question here, you don’t know anywhere near enough to be breeding.

shouldn’t be this soon – she’s probably just tired. u don’t see significant changes until 2 weeks before whelping. at 6 weeks you can feel the puppies inside, but probably want a professional or vet doing this to avoid doing some damage to the developing pups. at 6 weeks the pup will also show up on an xray. approximately 2 weeks before whelping your dog will have an increase in appetite and will really start to put on weight and bulge, but nothing really before that. if it’s determined that she is preggo then do switch her to a high quality puppy food for more nutrients and also feed her 3 separate times a day instead of one big meal a day – that way the food wouldn’t be pushing against the developing pups, other than that there’s really not much u can do besides prepare for the pups.

She will begin to really show after about 5 weeks when you’ll notice her “wasteline” getting thick. At 7 weeks, your vet can x-ray and should be able to tell the number of puppies. You can also feel the puppies move. At 8 weeks, she will have milk, and deliver at 9 weeks. There are many other stages in between, but this will give you some idea.
This question has bothered me for many years. I have owned many dogs over the years and successfully bred many of them. I can honestly say that some mated bitches seemed pregnant but were not, others showed little signs of being pregnant but were. I even had a vet once tell me my dog was definitely pregnant but was not. So whenever I breed any of my dogs I assume they are pregnant, care for the bitch as if she is, plan for the birth as if it is definate and let nature take it’s course.
When a dog gets pregnant it takes 63 days or 9 weeks.
Just get out the calender and mark it from the day she
conceived.
at about 3-4wks. she will start looking a little rounder in the stomach area. her teats will get a little larger and be a shinny pinkish color.
At 53 days you can have an x-ray taken to see how many puppies she will have and if she will have any problems.
i would also start researching how to whelp a litter so you know what you will need and what to do. you need to be prepared if you have never whelped a litter and having a experienced breeder on hand would help.
Common signs is she will start nesting (You already need a welping box) she will be becoming thicker/fatter and her teats will get bigger. Also rushing from room to room, whimpering, scratching at things, These can all take place several days before, though.
One or 2 days before birth the females temp usually drops 2-3 degrees F from the norm being 101.5 F
Before labour she may keep checking/licking her genitals, refuse food, and may vomit.
You should probably have your Bitch checked by a vet a few days before expected birth, he can check that all is well (some things can be predicted, some not). You should also have her vet checked about 24 hours after the last puppy, too.
Your vet can give you more info, but being this “wasn’t a mistake” you should know more…
She will need regular excersice and more nutrients, too.and if you havn’t had her treated for rounworm after she mated, you should now or the roundworm larvae in her muscles will become active due to hormones caused by the pregnancy and infect her puppies through the bloodstream before birth, and by the time the puppies are 4 weeks old they might have full grown roundwarms in ther intestines if the mother wasn’t treated.
*i was also very confused in your question, how many weeks pregnant is she at the moment? the average gestation period is 63 days.

I breed my shih-tsu a little over 3 months ago. The breeding did take. I noticed when she first came home that her bottom was still swolen, she was tired alot, she did not really eat to much, her teets were nice and pink, her behavior changed she was always a quite dog never ever barked but when we would have company she would bark at them the first few minutes upon there arrival, she followed me everywhere, she began what I called the nesting process she got ahold to one of my daughters stuffed animals and carried it everywhere at first and then would just hide it and play with it once every couple of days but would throw a fit if my daughter wanted it back!! She did not begin to show untill she was 5 to 6 weeks. But her nipples did fill up with milk or they were getting ready for milk a little earlier than what was the normal. I could totally tell because I knew my dog and I knew her behavior. Just watch and see how she starts acting. I did take her to the vet about 4 weeks along or so and the vet could feel her stomach and could tell she was preg. We did the x-ray about 8 weeks or so so that I would know how many puppies to expect if there was a problem during her labor. And I was very glad I did because she only had one puppy and he was breech so we had to watch for signs of distress or no progress during labor. Everything did turn out OK but I had to stay up with her late one Friday night because I knew something was different in her behavior needless to say she went in labor at 1:30 in the morning and her pup was born at 7:19 am and she did need my assistance on getting him out . Sorry this is so long but I can give you the total experience (what she done the day before labor till during labor and finally when and how I the pup came out) You can email me privately if you like. Anyway I personally think the answer the your question is watch her behavior over the next couple of weeks you will know by how she is acting and the actually facts and signs I learned alot by doing tons of research on the net I saved all of the links if you are interested. I almost forgot to ask do you know the exact lock date? It is very important to know that if you are not sure call where ever it is that you breed her. And to answer the question somone asked earlier I also took my dog to the stud because the breeder was my best friend and when my dog happen to go in heat I was scheduled for a major surgery so everyone does things different and sometimes out of the norm and for certain unexpected reasons might have caused the circumstances. And it always erk’s me when someone ask a question and there is always those people who answer negative when it does not help don’t bother to respond to a question if all you will do is criticize and that makes people not want to post the question and that might miss some really good advice due to being scared to get a negative responce!

The first answer you got was one of the best — the female’s vulva stays puffy — not as large as when in full-blown season, but not normal not-in-heat size either. You’ll make yourself insane (even experienced breeders go through this) thinking yes, no, yes, no. The best thing you can do is see if your vet has an ultrasound and if so, take her in about 30 days after the last breeding (your breeder should be able to tell you that date) and do the u/s. It’s not the most accurate way to count puppies, but you will def. know if she is pg or not.
