What are the risks of taking aspirin during pregnancy?

Question by Nina Lee: What are the risks of taking aspirin during pregnancy?
My OB/GYN has told me that he wants me to start taking a baby asprin daily when/ if I get pregnant. I am at high risk for blood clots. This was found while being tested for lupus and some other things (which were all negative). I have a 2 year old son and have never had any problems with clotting before. I know he wouldn’t recommend anything that would hurt the baby (benefits outweighing risk, etc) but I also know that I am his patient and he has to do what’s best for me.
Can’t this be bad for the baby though? Or is aspirin only bad for them after they are born? Thanks
(He stressed “baby” aspirin, not full strength adult aspirin.)
I asked my primary care physician about this for a second opinion and he said to do whatever my ob/gyn recommends. (I guess maybe I need a 3rd opinion from a different doctor.)
In case this helps…

I believe the high risk of blood clot thing is called antiphospholipid syndrome (from what I’ve read it also puts you at high risk for miscarriage and preeclampsia).

Also, I had preeclampsia during my first pregnancy.

hmm i thought aspirin was unsafe to take during pregnancy but if she told you she wants you to take it due to her concern of blood clots do as you are told or see if you can find an alternative that may be safer. good luck

  2. Marks Wifee says:

Question: Is it safe to take aspirin during pregnancy?

Answer: In most cases, no. While it’s highly unlikely that taking a single dose of aspirin in early or mid-pregnancy will have a harmful affect, the drug can cause problems for both you and your baby if you take it regularly in normal adult doses while you’re pregnant. So, except in a few cases, it’s best to avoid aspirin altogether during this time.

Here’s why: Studies have linked aspirin to various pregnancy complications. A few studies show that taking aspirin around the time of conception and in early pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. And some researchers believe that taking aspirin at adult doses during pregnancy might affect the baby’s growth and may slightly increase the risk of a placental abruption.

Finally, taking full-dose aspirin later in pregnancy might delay labor and increase the risk of heart and related lung problems in your newborn and bleeding complications for you and your baby.

On the other hand, if you’re already taking a prescribed dose of aspirin for a specific condition, you may need to continue taking it during pregnancy. (Check with your healthcare provider.)

In certain situations, your caregiver may advise you to start taking a small dose of aspirin each day, usually similar to the amount in one baby aspirin. Most experts believe low-dose aspirin therapy is safe during pregnancy.

For example, some experts recommend that pregnant women with a condition called antiphospholipid syndrome take a low dose of aspirin in addition to a drug called heparin. Antiphospholipid syndrome is diagnosed in women who have certain antibodies in their blood and who also have a history of blood clots or some types of pregnancy problems.

Some research shows that certain women at high risk for preeclampsia (including women with chronic hypertension, severe diabetes, or kidney disease, or who had severe preeclampsia in a prior pregnancy) may benefit from low-dose aspirin therapy, although not everyone agrees on who is a good candidate for this treatment, when it should begin, and what the optimal dose is.

So unless your healthcare provider prescribes it, you should avoid taking aspirin altogether, as well as other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen sodium (Aleve), and ketoprofen (Orudis), which can have similar effects.

Check the labels of all over-the-counter drugs to make sure they don’t contain aspirin or other NSAIDs. Better yet, check with your caregiver or pharmacist. It can be hard to tell because some products list their ingredients under different names. Aspirin is sometimes called salicylate or acetylsalicylic acid, for example.

When you need to take something for pain relief while you’re pregnant, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is considered safe to use as directed on the label.

    good luck! God bless!

your obgyn is being paid for 100 % of her time or his. I do not blame you for being worried. is is worring to me too. So call them back and tell them you are not comfortable with taking the asprin and see what they say. a lot of times they will ask you to do something that they don’t really need to have you do. You should not have to go into the office just talk with them on the phone. They are getting a one time fee for how much time they use is not included. So use all the time you want.

  4. Michelle says:

Aspirin use is most risky in the 3rd trimester, when even one typical dose can interfere with fetal growth and cause other problems. Aspirin can prolong pregnancy and labor and lead to other complications during delivery. It can increase risk of hemorrhage at delivery and even of bleeding problems in the newborn. In saying this, a daily low dose aspirin may prevent preeclampsia in high risk women and can be used safely though the 36th week. Hope this helps somewhat

  5. Bandi says:

get a second opinion from another DOCTOR if you are nervous.
trust you instincts about being nervous to take the aspirin, but I know I am not a doctor, and I can’t imagine that there is a lot of doctors here or that they would be able to give you an informed decision with the information you’ve provided… Just get a second opinion from another doctor. People do that all the time…..

  6. *Bumble Bear* says:

Its fine…put it this way taking a low dose(baby aspirin) will do better for you then not taking it. blood clotting can result in back to back miscarriages and other health issues to you. By taking this aspirin you are thinning your blood making the flow to your baby and placenta much better then if you were not taking it..now u will be closely monitored just to make sure things are going well but your baby should be fine…Doctors have been recommending these methods to women who are trying to conceive and expectant mothers who are at risk for preeclampsia and your disorder…Take your docs word for it,a low does will do just fine…good luck!!!

  7. Me! says:

I am 35 weeks and have been takin 81mg aspirin daily for about 4 months for high blood pressure and blood clot prevention and my baby is developing perfectly. The warnings you hear about is for the adult dose of 325mg.
