One that comes to mind is “pre eclamcia” I know its spelled wrong :S its a build up of blood in your legs can be harmful to you and the baby.

I don’t think I’ve ever been told to watch my weight while I was pregnant…but then I have this habit of only gaining 10 or 12 pounds through the whole thing. If you have questions about your weight gain, you should talk to your doctor. Not everyone should gain only the “average” amount or gain up to the average amount. Every woman is different. So it’s really hard to answer this question without knowing you personally.

  2. Bethany T says:

I think most women gain more than the 40 pounds.. As long as you’re healthy, and your doctor isn’t concerned, you don’t need to worry about it.

Everyone’s so different that what’s normal for you is going to be different than what’s normal for others.

    Good luck!

  3. Wife&MotherTo2 says:

Well I gained 50 lbs. or so during my pregnancy with my first son, no gestational diabetes involved, I am usually a 12 to 14 slim when not pregnant, and my weight was all in my belly while pregnant, but I had a buttload of water inside me, so I wouldn’t worry about it if it happened again. I lost the weight ALL OF IT within 3 months post partum. I don’t think you need to worry about it. Eat healthily and get excercise, if you still gain, then so be it.

Low self-esteem and a larger challenge to lose the weight after your little one is born?? LOL. Sorry, but I’ve gained WAY more than expected (due in a few days, and have gained about 50lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh) I’ve had no health problems…. I just feel like a whale. Hehe. Thankfully I’m tall (5’11″) and was very thin to begin w/… so I look like all belly… but that just makes me worry more, cuz that means I’m gonna look pregnant for quite a while after my little one is born! *shrug* oh well. It’s all worth it to me! I eat super healthy and exercise, so what can ya do, right?
    Good luck!

  5. Doula Doing Research says:

Obese women (and that is way more 10 or 20 pounds overweight) have a higher risk of gestational diabetes and also an increased risk of developing preeclampsia, although there is evidence-based research showing that most cases of preeclampsia can be avoided by diet. Do a google search for “The Brewer Diet” by Tom Brewer, MD.

  6. LemonTreeFriend says:

I suffered from sevver pre-eclampsia. But my problem was that I gained the weight because of water rention, not my daily habits. I guess when people say watch how much you gain, they really mean STAY HEALTHY.
Because if you eat junk foods its A. bad for baby and B. puts you at greater risk for Ges. Diabetes and Pre-eclampsia.

Pregnancy indunce hypertension is another one to be mindful of. It’s actually a symptom of Pre-E.
