Teenage Pregnancy In Nigeria: Health Risks and Poverty

According to the United Nations, 53000 women in Nigeria die annually of pregnancy-related illnesses. That is one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Many are teenaged mothers in a country with one of the world’s highest adolescent fertility rates. A large percentage of these deaths are teenage mothers. Nigeria also has one of the highest adolescent fertility rates in the world. VOA’s Brian Padden talked to doctors and youth counselors in Nigeria who say teenage mothers are more at risk because of poverty, lack of access to health care and a culture that does not like to talk about sex.

  2. JessicaBoulton says:

truely said! girls and woman not educated so they dont no nothing no nowledge so they get pregant and get hiv

  3. undiesinabunch says:

Teenage pregnancy is rampant because these girls in poverty don’t have better alternatives such as education and/or jobs for themselves or a future with a boy from their village with education and/or a job. With a bleak financial future they might as well have a baby to give their life purpose. The education and job problems are the source of the baby problem. The baby problem is a symptom.
