H1N1 Vaccine and Pregnancy, what are the risks?
Question by ilovenerd2003: H1N1 Vaccine and Pregnancy, what are the risks?
I am 5 1/2 months pregnant and I do not usually get the flu shot. I’ve been considering it this year due to the new threats and am going to ask my OB about it at my next appointment. Has anybody heard of any bad side affects from this vaccine in pregnant women and their babies? What about the fact that I haven’t had a flu shot in 6 or 7 years, will that affect me if I get either the regular flu shot or the H1N1 vaccine or both together?

They do recommend getting the vaccine. Pregnant women and young children are more prone to get the H1N1. I don’t think I myself will be getting the H1N1 vaccine, I’ve heard because it’s so new there can be problems and bad side effects that come with it.. but I would say for sure get the seasonal flu shot. Your doctor will tell you to get both (all three shots, as the H1N1 has 2 shots my doctor told me) shots. It’s really up to you though.
They say to get the shot not the nasal spray. But they are saying that its safe. My doctor thinks I should get it but if I get the shot it won’t be until the end of the month.
I have been recommended by my OB to get both seasonal and H1N1 flu shot for the risk to my health if I catch flu or if the baby catches it within six months of birth. There are no known bad/side effects because there have never been a trial on pregnant women and there would never be.
About 15% of pregnant women get seasonal flu shot and althogh it was not a trial, there has been no reports of side effects in these women. H1N1 vaccine is prepared the same way as the seasonal vaccine, so it is assumed (logically so), that this vaccine would have similar or no side effects.
Do not get the flu mist as it has live virus, get the shot which has killed virus. Do not get the vaccine if you are allergic to eggs since both vaccines are prepared by growing the virus in eggs.
I got my seasonal flu shot at 15 weeks and waiting for h1n1 to arrive at our hospital. Follow the link for more information. You should also talk to your doctor before you make the decision.
Good luck!
There are no bad side effects from the H1N1 vaccine. It should be just fine for you and your baby. Except for the killed virus itself, it is exactly the same as the regular flu shot, and has actually had *more* testing than this year’s seasonal shot.
Its okay to get the regular flu shot. I have never gotten it before so I was a little scared of getting sick but I felt fine. Just make sure to get the one without the perserivites as it does have mercury in it. I got mine about 3 weeks ago. And i’m now almost 32 weeks pregnant.
My OB/GYN is telling me to get the swine flu shot but im not sure about that one.
thats just the thing. they have no freakin clue

Since very few women have had this vaccine yet (it just made it to clinics in the last 7 days) you probably won’t hear much in the lines of direct experiences.
But I will tell you that this “new” H1N1 vaccine is no more “new” than the annual seasonal flu vaccine that comes out every year. Flu vaccines are made upon the same foundation, and the only thing that changes is the DNA of the specific virus it is made to protect you against. So this H1N1 vaccine is essentially the same vaccine altered to match the new strain.
It had to meet all the same quality standards during production, the same testing and research phases. It was NOT rushed to market without testing, as many people are falsely believing.
Flu vaccines have been given for decades and there is no evidence that it is harmful to pregnant women or their babies. Side effects are just like any other immunization, related to the injection itself, muscle soreness, headache, etc. Just like with any medication it bears to reason that some small percentage of the population may be allergic to the vaccine, but that is nothing that can be predicted nor does it mean the vaccine is unsafe. Very very very rarely do allergic reactions lead to serious consequences like death.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never had a flu shot before or if you haven’t had one in many years. You can get them both together.
my sisters friend works in the place where they are producing the h1n1 flu vaccine, not the normal flu shot, but the h1n1 vaccine, and she told my sister that there isnt enough research on this shot, and so I am TOTALLY NOT getting this shot, but I did get the normal flu shot.
Being pregnant is one thing, but I am not going to get a shot where they dont have enough research, and they’ll give it to pregnant women and than just “wait” and see what happens… I dont think so!
I have two kids 11 and 9 and am not planning to vaccinate them with this lethal stuff that hasn’t been thoroughly tested. The vaccine I read is associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). This topic is even acknowledged by the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC). Guillain-Barré syndrome
(GBS) is a rare disorder in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. GBS can cause symptoms that last for a few weeks or several months. Most people recover fully from GBS, but some people have permanent nerve damage. In rare cases, people have died of GBS, usually from difficulty with breathing. In the United States, for example, an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 people develop GBS each year on average, whether or not they received a vaccination. This is about 1 to 2 cases of GBS per 100,000 people.
Obviously, with the increase in vaccine usage of the H1N1 vaccine (over 250,000 dosages) will no doubtly increase cases of GBS. I know people who had swine flu and diagnosed with Swine Flu got over in a 2 weeks. They are doing fine now. Imagine if you get the vaccine for H1N1 and you get major nerve damage. Some kids have even died from the vaccine. Thats pretty permanent. Watch this youtube video about healthcare providers who refuse to take the vaccine due to the risks involving H1N1 Vaccines. Those who took the vaccine didn’t know any better. Watch these videos that discuss H1N1 Vaccine, you decide if they are safe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4SmFxyust0&feature=fvw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RFJlsd8_J0&feature=related
You decide if you want to take it. Contains Mercury that triggers Austim and GBS Syndrome.
I think the initial test subjects who took the vaccine is nothing more than a group of guinea pigs. Even the CDC site doesn’t state that the vaccine is proven to be safe or that it won’t prevent GBS.
