Are there health risks to pregnancy for women over 40?
Question by Treblacram: Are there health risks to pregnancy for women over 40?
I had always heard that pregnancy in women over 40 increases risk of birth defects and disorders such as down syndrome. But, I am curious if this is valid now considering that medical care is much better than it was in the past. Also, I see many women age 45 and older who are conceiving and seem to do just fine.

Its still valid
Eggs start to mature after 40 resulting in what *could* be genetic defects – no matter how far technology has come this will always remain a fact

There are still risks, especially for Downs Syndrome. Medical technology can’t solve the fact that eggs age.

I believe it will be helpful in resolving your problem.
My mom got pregnant at 43 and my little brother is fine and shes fine. so i would check out the website im including for more information.
hope this helps.
Actually, the increased risk begins at about age 35. Women over this age can, of course, still have healthy babies, but there are more things to look out for. Since in today’s day and age we have very good medical tools to screen, evaluate and prevent such things, many women over 40 are having healthy babies these days. A woman is born with all of her eggs, so the older we get, the older our eggs get. Therefore a woman at say 44, has eggs that are TWICE as old as a woman at 22. Even though the 44 year old is perfectly healthy, her eggs may have become damaged due to age.
I had a baby 4 months ago that was born with DS. I am only 22 years old and she is my first child. Down syndrome happens spontaneously for an unknown reason after conception. They say women who are older have a higher risk of having a baby with DS but that doesn’t always seem to be the case. I think any woman, any age can have a baby with DS. Also the genetic specialist at the hospital told me he is seeing an increase in young mothers having babies with DS. Hope this helps.
