Antiphospholipid syndrome. If treated with blood thinners what is the pregnancy risk THEN?

Question by ǺМ إ Ґнε Šåщę ĠıŗĻ ♫: Antiphospholipid syndrome. If treated with blood thinners what is the pregnancy risk THEN?
I’ve read tons of information about it and I know it increases risks for the baby and the mother but what happens if you’re on the heparin and the lovenox (LOvenox)? Any statistics? I didn’t have these questions yesterday when I was diagnosed and I don’t know when I’ll see my doctor again so I thought I’d ask for someone’s personal experience with ASP and blood thinners. Thanks.

Women can be on blood thinners while pregnant. You just have to be very careful about bruising and falling, and etc. Also, on the specifics, I’m afraid you’ll have to talk to your doc because I don’t know your history. I work in a pharmacy as a pharmacy tech and I’ve seen pregnant women on heparin and lovenox.

I have Factor V Leiden. It was discovered when I was 26 weeks pregnant with my first. I was put on Lovenox twice daily after leaving the hospital and then at the every end of the pregnancy on Heparin.
My daughter is a healthy and happy almost 3 year old.

And then I got pregnant with my second in July of 08. I started Lovenox immediately once daily. Then Heparin twice daily at the end of the pregnancy. She is now a healthy almost three month old.

From what I understand Lovenox or Heparin helps but it is not an absolute guarantee that you will not have a problem (DVT, miscarriage, or stillbirth). I was had ultrasounds every 2 to 3 weeks after week 18 with my second child. They were looking mainly for clots in the placenta.

If you have another questions that I might be able to help with, then feel free to contact me. Take care.

Heparin and lovenox are safer to take during pregnancy than coumadin, which I believe is a category X for pregnancy. Sometimes heparin or lovenox is given during pregnancy to prevent or to treat certain blood clotting disorders you may have. Even a low dose aspirin can be given to pregnant women to prevent a miscarriage (if blood clots are the reason for previous miscarriages) and to help prevent other blood clotting issues. These medications, however, are used only when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks to the baby.
