@tetsubo57 Historians call that period of American business history “welfare capitalism” because unlike other countries abroad that responded to development of working class movements with state concessions (the first major universal pension plan was in Bismarckian Germany!) American firms responded by provided a number of company provided services. There was often a catch – no unions! In a great book I read on this period a while ago the author called it a “velvet glove over an iron fist.”

I agree, I just find it quite ironic how these “Libertarians” are now so adamantly opposed to socialism, government..( ALL government is evil and can’t do anything right..etc ), yet libertarianism, until the early 70s, was essentially another way of saying socialist. someone who subscribes to direct democracy, worker’s rights, social justice.. Thomas Paine’s ” Rights Of Man “, lays out the original principles of Amerrican ” Libertarianism”,nothing close to modern libertarianism.

I always have and always will fail to see how people miss the fact that when you fast-forward time on any debate involving individual rights, the wacky liberal perspective always becomes an assumptive right. Liberal is a weird word…In Europe it has a completely different meaning. Coming from liberal political philosophy in the Enlightenment era, specifically John Locke, it was originally used to speak of human rights – specifically in relation to the removal of state coercion. Liberal economists, like Adam Smith took that idea and applied it to the functioning of the economy. They reasoned – economies should be free of state coercion/regulation. This is basically conservatism in the US
@nstiles42 The definition of ‘conservative’ has changed over the past 40 years. American conservatives are essentially Fascists at this point.
That ‘reigning’ in is the bad part. They have ‘reigned’ in civil rights, worker protections, environmental protections, regulations that were badly needed, etc. In short I don’t see it as yin/yang. I see it as an agenda that does material harm to America. That benefits the 1% at the cost of human lives. It is not morally equivalent.

I hear that states that have the death penalty have higher amounts of murder. If that is true, than conservative are supporting an action that some how effects the murder rate. If that is the case needs to be further studied so that we know what the real reason is. My gut reaction when when I first heard this was to get rid of the death penalty, but “correlation is not causation”. Overall I think conservatives politicians have a moral ground but are not good seminarians but I could be wrong.

I really am not that invested in party “right” and party “wrong” to care, but you are an intelligent man, so I’m assuming you realize that both sides have given us boons and mistakes. Liberals give, conservatives reign in. It’s ying and yang, and without both we would be a poorer nation for it.
@nstiles42 The argument is that conservatives have added nothing of value to our society. While everything that we hold dear and take for granted was achieved by a liberal progressive. I thought that was pretty clear. But Americans keep forgetting it. They have spent so many generations reaping the benefits of liberal progressive efforts they just think of them as ubiquitous. But they were hard fought. We must not forget that.

They all say if you can do the crime you can do the time. I did my time. And the end of my probation was 16 years ago. 1995 I’m still doing time but I don’t understand I thought once I served my time I was a free man. But to this day I can’t get a job I can’t own a business I can’t even own a home. Where is my rights freeman I did my time where are my rights. Luckily my iq is well above 140 so I own 2 homes in I own a business and I make a very good money. middle class without the rights
So you’re saying that want you been convicted of a crime and you serve your time you work 2 to 4 years of probation or jail or whatever it is you did. You still don’t have the right to get a job you don’t have the right to vote you can’t protect your family from the drug dealers across the road. Even if that crime was committed 20 years ago. You still do not have the right to have a home you cannot have a home in your name you can’t have a business in your name you can’t get a job at mcdonalds.
