Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition when switching to new insurance?

Question by Madcow4694: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition when switching to new insurance?
My husband got a new job and his new health insurance starts August 1st. I just found out I am pregnant six weeks along. My first appointment with the doctor is 8/10. Will we encounter problems with coverage for this pregnancy?

(I currently have health insurance through my employment, but his is better, which is why we are switching to his — my coverage through my employer ends 7/31)

Thanks!

Yes, pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition when applying or switching insurance companies. Cobra is rather expensive, though you could possibly be picked up by your states medicaid. Medicaid is available for pregnancies.

  1. Common Sense says:

    Yes, it is.

  2. bosn94 says:

Dependents are automatically covered in group health if this is what he has. Check first with his insurer, and should not be a pre-existing condition. Private plans can vary.

  3. StephenWeinstein says:

If this is health insurance through his new employer, then pregnancy is not considered a preexisting condition. Not all insurance covers pregnancies at all. If the new insurance does not cover any pregnancies, then it will not cover this one. If it does cover pregnancies, and it is through his employer, then it will cover this one.

If this is health insurance that you bought on his own, not through his employer, then pregnancy is considered a preexisting condition.

  4. mbrcatz says:

When you go TO a group insurance policy through his employer, they are NOT ALLOWED to consider pregnancy preexisting. So no worries.
