wow that video just scared me I don’t think I could watch my baby underwater like that for so long without thinking she was going to drown….you are much braver than I am!!!!
I agree. It is the most amazing and most beautiful birth. These lucky women get to labor in a huge swimming pool before the birth. A wonderful way to totally relax both mom and baby during labor. Babies love water!!!!

I know the feeling. Funny, we don’t think that when we see a pregnant woman. Babies are amazing!! Moms too!!!!!
The whole time I say yelling get the baby out of the water! over and over even tho I know it can breathe!
That’s a normal question. We are not used to seeing how wonderfully adaptive babies are to a water environment. Baby is calmly and easily breathing through the cord as always and takes the first instinctual breath of air when the face comes up and out of the water. Mind bending isn’t it?? It is much more difficult for the baby to suddenly have the oxygen supply cut when someone cuts the cord too soon after the birth without giving the baby an adequate time to switch systems.
I am sorry if this is a really stupid question. But they can’t drown when they are born correct? I know that they have been in the womb for 9 months and have been breathing through the umbilical cord. But I just would be so scared if my baby was born this way.

@cherrysrule1 Their instinct to take their first breath doesn’t hit (under normal circumstances) until their face hits air. Until then, they get their oxygen from the placenta.

It’s easy to forget that the womb is filled with water not air. This makes the baby an expert at living underwater. This is a very gentle birth for both baby and mother helping both have a quick recovery after childbirth.
Umm i may sound realy stupid .. but how did the baby go under water that long i mean..?

Being born in the caul is a sign of good luck in many cultures. It also means that the mother and baby are experiencing a gentle birth. Remember the baby is perfectly capable of breathing underwater. They are experts at that.
