When in pregnancy should I wear maternity clothes?
Question by Pregnant with baby #1: When in pregnancy should I wear maternity clothes?
I’m still in my first trimester, but my clothes are already feeling tight! Its hard to fit comfortably in my jeans and I don’t want to (nor can I), wear sweat pants everyday. Should I just buy some regular clothes in bigger sizes? What do I do when those don’t fit though? Please give me some advice.

You wear them when they make you more comfortable than your normal clothes. There are no guidelines every woman is different.

If you’re in your first trimester chances are maternity clothes will not fit very well yet. They are designed for when you have a belly. However, they do make things called “belly bands” that allow you to wear your ‘regular’ clothing still. They sell them at motherhood maternity.
you start wearing maternity clothes when you don’t fit regular clothes….i say you should buy maternity clothes not just bigger sized clothing
I am 11 weeks and my jeans no longer fit me. I have bought a couple pairs of maternity pants the ones with the stretch waist. I have also bought bigger size jeans. Do what is comfortable for you. Good luck!!!!!
i found it tough too because i was about a size 2-3 when i got pregnant so my clothes quickly didnt fit. however, i didnt fit into maternity clothes because they’re all built for bigger bellies. i just wore stuff that was comfy at home and bought a pair of work pants that were bigger (my shirt was stretchy) and washed them frequently until i was about 15-17 weeks preggo and could justify going and buying maternity clothes. im now preggo with my second and have the same plans, although i still have some of my maternity clothes that will fit me
I say get some maternity clothes… They usually have elastic in jeans and stuff, so when you get bigger you won’t have to get bigger clothes. These days they have really cute maternity clothes too. =)
You can wear maternity clothes whenever you want to. My first pregnancy I wore them at 5 months, the second at 3 months, the third at 7 months, and the fourth I never did. lol. It’s all about how pregnant you want to feel and look, I think. You can easily get by with regular clothes if you want to, just get stretchy shirts and pants and maybe do the old elastic through the button-hole trick if you need to. This pregnancy I’ve just liked my shape more and I’ve been wearing tighter fitting shirts that show off my belly and just wearing low-rise stretch pants. You can easily find some that are flattering when you’re pregnant!
that’s what i did. i am 31 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby and i just bought my first pair of maternity jeans…EVER! the styles of clothes these days are actually nice because i can wear stylish shirts that still fit my belly, like the baby doll shirts and tees and long sleeves that are long and stretchy. i only have about 4 mat. tops. i love to show off my belly but if your belly and boobs are screaming to be let out of your jeans ans shrits then it’s probably time.
My clothes also started to fit tight in my 1st trimester and I went ahead and started wearing maternity clothes – they fit better and lasted for months. Everyone’s different – don’t be hesitant – do what’s best for your body – wear those maternity clothes proud!
I’m 10 weeks and I wear them although I’m not showing yet. None of my regular clothes fit but hey its better to wear maternity clothes out than your jammies! And they make them now where the jeans have a button and zipper in front and the strechy in the back. and they also have the elastic band so you don’t have to wear that huge front panel in the front that you won’t fill out for anoter 4 months! Go ahead and get some maternity clothes!
One thing I did was to get some super-low-cut jeans and wear them with the waist falling under my belly. Maybe you could try that–get some in a size or two bigger. Wear them normally right now, and as your stomach expands, keep pushing the waist down.
maternity clothes are clothes for comfort while pregnant . There is no rule of thumb when to start wearing them.
If you have stretch leggings and long blouse/dress style top with an empire look that would still work for now or you could wear pants with elastic waists
Buy maternity clothes when you are uncomfortable in your pre-pregnancy clothes.
Don’t just buy clothes in bigger sizes-they will be unflattering (make you look bigger than you are, hang funny etc.).
Get maternity clothes! You don’t need to spend a fortune on these as you will probably only wear them a few months.
this could help you for now.

When your other clothes don’t fit.
That is the hardest time to find stuff to wear during pregnancy!!!! I had a hard time too. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but go to google and look for a product called a bella band. It’s this elastic thing that slides up over your pants you can can leave them unbuttoned, and it’s realllllllllllllllly comfortable!!! It will make your pre-pregnancy pants fit a little longer, and then when you buy maternity pants, buy them looser and you can wear this band to hold them up until you “grow” into them.
I found it seriously helpful!!!
I don’t know how things are working out for you, but when i was 3 1/2 months I bought a pair of expensive maternity pants, and thought that I would be able to wear them throughout my pregnancy, but my butt and thighs got slightly bigger so I couldn’t wear them by month 5.
Another trick is to use a rubber band or a hair tie through your button hole on your pants and then loop it around the button
That will give you an inch or so……. until you decide to buy maternity pants!!
I really hope this information helps you!! I remember how frustrating it was when my pants started not fitting right.
I still haven’t started to wear maternity clothes and I’m 20 weeks. I’m going to do my best to avoid them at all costs too. I buy my jeans super low rise so that they will sit below my abdomen, and so many of today’s fashions look like maternity clothes anyways! You can do what I’ve done. I shopped the clearance racks at the store and found a ton of cute clothes that were a size or 2 bigger than what I normally wear. I payed between $ 3 and $ 5 a piece for them. Several of the shirts that I found were almost identical to clothes that I found in maternity stores! I just didn’t have to pay the outrageous prices. I really didn’t mind spending money on clothes that may or may not fit later in pregnancy because they were so inexpensive. I also know that I will be able to wear them again after I have the baby because I know I wont be going straight back to my original sizes. As for jeans, if you don’t want to buy them as low rise as I do (they can take awhile to get used to) you can try 2 things. First there is this thing called a bella band. It can hide the bulge of you leaving your pants unbuttoned. You can also try using a rubber band to hold your jeans together. What you do is loop the rubber band through the loop of the jeans so that it stays and then use it to hold on to the button.
Good luck and congrats!
