Here’s a recap in case you missed it: This episode of Mad Men opens in May 1965 as all the employees of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are making big plans to watch the Muhammad Ali v. Sonny Liston rematch fight. Peggy is one of the few who doesn’t have any plans for the fight since it is her birthday – she’s planning on having a romantic dinner with her boyfriend, Mark. When old boyfriend Duck Phillips sends her a gift-wrapped box of business cards trying to entice her to join him in starting a new ad agency, she rejects him. Elsewhere in the office, Don gets a message that Anna Draper’s niece, Stephanie, needs to speak with him immediately. Knowing that this urgent message is likely grave news about Anna, Don cancels his plans to attend the Ali fight with Roger. Before Peggy can depart the office for her birthday plans, Don calls her in to further review, and reject, the creative team’s pitches for the Samsonite account. Despite Don’s belittling treatment of Peggy she opts to stay and work through the evening on the account, though it costs her the dinner with Mark. Because of Peggy’s choice to stay at work, Mark breaks up with her over the phone. Peggy picks a fight with Don and the two wind up in an all-out shouting match. @willsmackyoudown thats what i meant, that the characters were so disrespectful. im an advid ali fan, i know that. i agree, very, accurate portrayal. many even started to absolutely hate him when he ignored the draft call for him because he did not want to support war he did not believe in.

Uh that’s how it was back then. No one really acknowledged the name change till after a few years. Alot of the fighters still called him Cassius too. Accurate portrayal. GOod job for the writers.
how disrespectful. they kept on calling Muhammad Ali, Cassius Clay even though after the first Liston bout he changed his name to embrace his faith and nationality.

This is my favorite Mad Men episode of all the seasons. Best Don and Peggy moment too.
I love this show–LOVE it. But…. *spoiler alert* I don’t trust Megan as far as I can throw her. Could she really be a sweet, Maria Von Trapp type who just wants to please Don & his children of divorce? Yeah. But something tells me Don’s finally going to get his comeuppance for the years of emotional deprivation and infidelity he treated Betty to. Is Megan a spy or tool from CGC? Maybe she’s a gold digger? Having no reservations about a one nighter with her boss points to trouble IMO…
these summaries are great, but I really find the voice/accent of the the woman who is speaking to be very irritating. If the Mad Men series can use acceptable accents, why can’t these episode summaries.
01:50 It was so hard watching Anna’s spirit come across the ether to step into SCDP and congratulate Don with a nod.
If it wasn’t for her complicity this life wouldn’t have been possible and she congratulates him with a nod and expression before her spirit slips away granting Don the final confirmation of his path, the last vote of confidence from the woman who knew him best.
This is an amazingly well written show. I agree with yerk3 Peggy is awesome and I think we are definitely going to see more depth in her character as the season progressess. Don’s alcoholism is making Don fall apart and it’s only a matter of time before he truly hits bottom.
Peggy is my new favorite character. She never gives up, and stands by her principles, even though almost everyone in her life is an asshole. She is constantly belittled, verbally abused and double-crossed, but she never lets it get to her, and when it does, she picks herself up and keeps going, because failure is not an option. Barring some unforseen gross injustice, I can see her attaining some position of power and paving the way for generations of girls after her.
