When you are pregnant, it is very important that you get the right amount of nourishment that your body needs. Remember, you are not only looking out for your own health, but that of you baby’s as well. When you are pregnant, you will have to increase the amount of food that you take in your body in order for it to be sufficient enough for two people.

A pregnant woman’s diet should include:

Four small meals a day: If you are pregnant, you will find yourself getting hungry more often. But instead of eating huge meals, you need to take in small servings many times during the day. This helps prevent heartburn and indigestion.
Healthy snacks: Along with regular meals, a pregnant woman should also eat some snacks in between. Snacks should be healthy and not composed of junk food or those with lots of additives. Healthy snacks should include: yogurt, nuts, cheese, fruits, and bread.
Eight glasses of liquids: This can either be water or fruit juices. Do not take in carbonated drinks such as soda because it has lots of calorie that may cause you to gain too much weight.
Multivitamins: Take those that are enriched with iron and calcium. When you are pregnant, you will most likely be iron deficient so it is necessary that you take supplements. Additionally, since you will be carrying added weight during pregnancy, it is important to take in calcium supplements to strengthen your bones.
Folic Acid: This is important for your baby to have proper brain development. Also, for the neural tubes to fully develop, the baby would need folic acid. This is why it is always advisable to take folic acid in as early as the first few days of pregnancy.

What you should not include in your diet:

Coffee: Actually, it is okay to drink coffee but limit it to 12 ounces a day. You can also opt to drink decaffeinated coffee if you want.

Raw fish and seafood: They may contain toxins when they are not cooked and this can be very harmful to you and your baby.

Raw vegetables: It is not really a big no-no but it is just given as a precautionary measure. Raw vegetables may contain fertilizers that are harmful to you and the baby.

Uncooked or half-cooked meat: Cold cuts and the like can pose a problem in regards to food poisoning thus they should be avoided as much as possible.

If you are an expectant mother, you will need to exert extra effort to make sure that you and your baby are getting the nourishment you need. As long as you are healthy and getting all the nourishment your body requires, then your baby will be healthy too. On the other hand, if you neglect this advice, you are putting your pregnancy at risk and you do not want this to happen, don’t you? Pregnancy can be the most fulfilling thing to happen to a woman therefore you should do what you can to guarantee that you and your baby will always be safe and healthy by getting the right diet.
